Ankle Fracture
Identifying Your Ankle Fracture
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you may have an ankle fracture that requires surgery or at the very least treatment at our Escondido, CA, office:
- Bruising that develops soon after the injury
- Blisters over the ankle fracture site
- Inability to walk
- Noticeable change in ankle appearance that is clearly different from the unharmed ankle
- Pain at the site of the fracture, which in some cases can extend from the foot to the knee
- Significant swelling, which may occur along the length of the leg or may be more localized
- Bone protruding through the skin (this requires immediate intervention because protrusion can lead to severe infection and prolonged recovery)
It is important to note that it is possible to walk with less severe breaks, so never rely on walking as a test of whether or not a bone has been fractured.
Receive Your Diagnosis, Start Treatment
Following an ankle injury, it is important to have the ankle evaluated by our foot and ankle specialists for proper diagnosis and treatment. The affected limb will be examined by one of our podiatrists, who will touch specific areas to evaluate the injury. In addition, your doctor may order X-rays and other imaging studies of your bones and ligaments, as necessary.
If your injury sent you to the emergency room, follow up with us as soon as possible for a more thorough assessment and X-rays of your tibia, talus, fibula, and all ligaments.

/
Worries about cost cause some patients to avoid even receiving X-rays to diagnose their injury, not to mention necessary treatment. You should know that your ankle fracture treatment will most likely be covered by insurance as it is a medical necessity. Our Escondido team accepts major PPOs and HMOs.
Nonsurgical Treatment Options
Depending on the type and severity of your ankle fracture, we may be able to complete treatment without any surgery. For example, posterior malleolus fractures are typically small and do not need surgical intervention.
Additionally, some lateral malleolus, medial malleolus, and bimalleolar fractures do not need surgery if they are stable or non-displaced. Nonsurgical fracture solutions we provide include cast immobilization, walking boots, or a removable brace.
Minimize Risk Now By Following the RICE Protocol
- Rest: Stay off the injured ankle. Walking may cause further injury.
- Ice: Apply an ice pack to the injured area, placing a thin towel between the ice and the skin. Use ice for 20 minutes and then wait at least 40 minutes before icing again.
- Compression: An elastic wrap, such as an ACE bandage, should be used to control swelling.
- Elevation: The ankle should be raised slightly above the level of your heart to reduce swelling.
