Ankle Pain
DEFINITION
Ankle pain can range from an annoying and irritating dull ache to a severe and more intense pain. It is frequently described as an ache or pain that is aggravated or worsened when weight is placed on the ankle. The cause of ankle pain may be attributed to a number of potential sources. In addition to the ache or pain being an obvious result of an ankle sprain, it can also be caused by other conditions such as arthritis, compression of a nerve, infection, or structural misalignment of the leg or foot.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
Ankle pain is often accompanied by swelling, stiffness, redness, and warmth in the pained area. As previously stated, an ankle sprain is often the cause of the pain, however, it can also be a result of ankle instability, gout, tendonitis, a fracture, as well as, nerve compression (tarsal tunnel syndrome), infection and poor structural alignment of the leg or foot as mentioned above.
DIAGNOSIS:
If ankle pain is being experienced, an appointment should be made with the doctors at North County Foot & Ankle Specialists to have the ankle examined. Continuing to try to walk on the ankle or waiting to have it examined just to see if the pain goes away or becomes more persistent or intense, only extends the discomfort and could possibly lead to other problems or an unnecessarily extended healing process.
TREATMENT:
Treatment methods may consist of rest, ice, elevation, and immobilization. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, may also be prescribed. Physical therapy and cortisone injection are also methods that can be tried. The doctors at North County Foot & Ankle Specialists can best determine the cause of the ankle pain and appropriate treatment options.
